Making New Years Resolutions
It
really is easy to make New Years Resolutions, most of us do, yet few
go through with their promises to see them blossom to fruition. Broken
New Years promises are as common as catching a cold, but take heart,
there are ways to make those resolutions work.
A New Years Resolution is just the same as making any goal in life,
if you don't follow through with basic goal setting principles, the
resolution is probably doomed to failure. There is no magic wand when
setting goals or resolutions, if you follow the basics that have been
proven to work, you will give yourself the best chance to succeed.
Here are the best steps to take when setting goals or New Years Resolutions.
- Write down your New Years resolution. Committing your goals to paper
gives them a more official feel and then sticking them in a place you
will see daily, such as on the fridge, certainly makes them more of
a concrete promise.
- Put a start date to the resolution. Yes, you need a day where you
say "this is the day that I begin to" and then work toward
your goal.
- Include a starting figure. If you want to lose weight or save money
you need to know where you stand right now. If you only have ten cents
in the bank and want to save $1000 in a year, you know how much you
need to put away each week. Likewise, if you want to lose 10 pounds
weight, you need to know how much you weigh now, otherwise how do you
know what you will end up.
- Write down a finishing date. Every journey has a beginning and an
end. You need to commit your resolution to a time frame.
- Set mini goals. Mini goals are like stepping stones. An example would
be if you want to lose 100 pounds by next New Years Eve you can set
mini goals to achieve each month, say lose 10 pounds a month.
- Stay positive, keep a good attitude about meeting your goals, think
you can and finding ways to meet the mini goals will come easy.
- Don't be depressed if you fail. Lot's of people say that New Years
resolutions are made to be broken. If you do break your promises by
not following these simple guidelines, don't fret, there is always next
year.
