Natural Cold Sore Remedies Home Remedy for Treating Cold Sores

Natural Cure for Cold Sores

Cold Sores or fever blisters are common outbreaks caused by the herpes-simplex virus and usually occur on the lips, the chin or in and around the mouth. While common, they can be very painful and ugly. The best prevention to help ward off the onset of cold sores is to apply sunscreen to the face and in particular around the mouth and chin. A sunscreen with an SPF of 15 plus is the best.

While prevention is the best part of cure, when you do get a cold sore there are home treatments that you can use to help clear the problem.

Home Remedy for Cold Sores or Fever blisters

Cold sore on the bottom lip. Once you have the Herpes Simplex Virus within your body, it will likely stay with you for the rest of your life. As most of us pick up cold sores when we are young, we are therefore at risk of having an outbreak at any time throughout our lives.

While the Herpes Simplex Virus should not be confused with the more dangerous strain that causes genital herpes and genital warts, it can be passed from person to person by kissing someone who has a cold sore.

Cold Sore outbreaks usually take a week to 10 days to heal but can be managed with natural treatments and home remedies.

Ice
When you start to feel that a cold sore is coming, you notice that tingly feeling on the lips, immediately rub ice on the area and usually this will stop the cold sore from forming. Everybody has ice in one form or other in the freezer. Just remember if you use frozen food as a substitute for ice, do not eat the food, throw it away to avoid spreading the virus.

Ice is also good to treat a cord sore after it has formed. Wrap an ice cub in a face washer or cloth and hold against the sore for as long as you can stand. Do this as often as you can and you will see the cold sore heal quicker than normal.

Watch Your Diet
If you are the type of person who gets cold sores regularly, eliminate foods that are high in the amino acid arginine. Foods such as chocolate, cola, beer, peanuts and cashews are all high in arginine, which cold sores need to survive.

Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Fruit and vegetables are natures gifts and promote healthy bodies.

Over the Counter Creams
You can buy good creams that help the healing process of the cold sore from chemists and supermarkets. These creams actually work, so don't be shy to try them.

Aloe Vera
Break a small piece of leaf from an Aloe Vera plant and rub the juice directly on the cold sore. Aloe Vera is one of natures finest healing agents and works as good as any over the counter cream.

Vaseline
As soon as you feel a cold sore on the way (normally signified by a tingling sensation) apply Vaseline on the spot when you go to bed. Do this for two or three night in a row, and it will never evolve.

Prevention Before Cure
Most outbreaks are due to being exposed to the sun, so use sunscreen whenever you go outdoors for any length of time.
