Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is virtually entirely a smoking related lung disease that has no cure. COPD is the 4th biggest killer of people in the US and is expected to be the 3rd leading cause of death worldwide by 2020.
Sad isn't it, that a disease that kills so many people each year is caused through something that can be avoided. Smoking Kills!
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is a combination of chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
There is no cure for COPD. Sufferers face a long and painful road where they must learn to cope with this debilitating disease the best they can. Quality of life is greatly reduced to being almost house bound. Life expectancy is reduced by up to 10 years.
The unfortunate fact is that almost 100% of those afflicted with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease could have been saved if they had quit smoking in time, or never took up the smoking habit in the first place.
We are not going into detail about the technical details of COPD on this page, there is a wealth of medical information across the net. What we will tell you is the effects of COPD that we see first hand. The horror we see with a loved one that is fighting for every breath he takes, every minute of the day. The agony on his face as he gasps for air. The terror in his eyes knowing that anytime now, that precious gulp of air could be his last. This is not a pretty sight.
The proud, strong man that we know and love so much has been reduced to someone who cannot walk more than twenty paces, without stopping for 10 minutes to catch their breath. A man who cannot walk up a dozen stairs without almost dying. A man who is slowly dying before our eyes, knowing the reason why he has COPD was caused by his own choice. Smoking!
When our friend first felt the effects that smoking was having on his lungs, that burning sensation after strenuous exercise that many smokers feel, he ignored it. He actually ignored it right up until the day when it got so bad, he could hardly get out of bed because of the coughing and frantic gulping for air.
He ignored the fact that smoking was slowly killing him until the day he could no longer work effectively. He wouldn't admit that his decision to smoke was putting his life at risk. Eventually he saw a doctor and admitted that smoking was causing him serious problems. Finally he quit smoking.
If you think that smoking won't effect you in any way, you are wrong. You are effectively shortening your life by 10 or more years, just because you smoke cigarettes. Life is short at any time, why make it shorter doing something that doesn't give you any benefit at all, except take your money and give you bad health.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is the 4th biggest killer of people in most western countries. It is caused almost entirely by smoking. There is no cure. If you smoke you are putting yourself on the list of future recipients of COPD. If you quit smoking now, your chances of living longer will increase and your chances of contracting COPD will decrease.
Remember... Smoking Kills.
Lung cancer is the biggest cancer related killer of men and the second biggest killer of women behind breast cancer. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is the fourth biggest killer of both men and women worldwide. Smoking certainly kills!
Unfortunately our loved one lost his battle with this horid disease on the 25th February 2009. May he rest in peace.
Please hound your loved ones and urge them to quit smoking as soon as possible
